Much of my career has been spent photographing things that are about to disappear.
That was certainly true when I was photographing Calgary’s East Village between 2004 and 2009. Photographs from that time chronicle the final days of an unholy trinity: The King Edward, St. Louis and Cecil hotels that anchored Calgary’s gritty East Village.
It’s an astonishing soaring masterpiece of light and space. When I stand on the main floor and raise my camera it’s a little glimpse of the divine. It’s surely destined to become one of the most beloved places in Calgary.
