f you can imagine a living, breathing, learning space where top culinary graduates flex their enterprising muscles in Calgary’s downtown core, you are seeing SAIT’s newest campus, The Tastemarket.
When completed, the Tastemarket by SAIT will be the centre for the new Culinary Entrepreneurship post diploma certificate — a year-long program that immerses students in the day-to-day life of a real-world hospitality establishment.
“SAIT’s action-based approach to learning will be the foundation of The Tastemarket,” said Tom Bornhorst, SAIT Dean of the School of Hospitality and Tourism.
“Through our Culinary Entrepreneurship post-diploma certificate, we will be offering the next generation of culinary industry leaders the knowledge and skills required to operate a business, produce creative solutions, nurture high-performing teams and drive product development.”
Successful applicants to the program must be graduates of either a culinary diploma, a journeyman cook or baker certificate program or have three to five years of work experience in the hospitality and food industry, as approved by the academic chair.
Once accepted, students in the program are eligible for one of six $5,000 scholarships.
Opening in September 2017, The Tastemarket will be a platform for students to create and market their products to the public.
The 9,000-square-foot space will be tailored to four stations: charcuteries and bar, patisserie, flatbreads and a line with daily student-produced creations.
Mentored by SAIT’s faculty of industry experts, students will learn the ropes of business operations, finance, regulations and human resource management to kick start a career in entrepreneurship.
